Once you are in-game you will open up a particular radial menu by pressing and holding 'V' - once this menu is open you will see an 'invite friends' option at the top of the radial menu.
Once past that point, you will (if you are not already in an online session) proceed to save and go to main menu where you will select 'Continue ' and that will create an online session for you. It's just a short few missions to introdue you to the game and then it should inform you that you can now coop. Before you can do coop you have to get through the prologue.
